Sonia Sklaver (1925 - 2020)
Sonia Sklaver’s high school education in Poland was interrupted by World War II. She was an excellent student with a facility for languages. She survived the war hiding her Jewish identity and working as a servant for Polish farmers. Following the war, she married a young man from her hometown and immigrated to America with him and their baby girl.
She was able to fulfill her dream to continue her education when her second and younger daughter was in high school during the late 1960s. She completed her GED and enrolled in the nursing program at Bergen Community College. Upon graduation, she became a dedicated and devoted nurse working in the Medical/Surgical unit at Barnert Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey.
She received many letters of gratitude from her patients for the expert care and compassion she showed them over the ten years that she worked as an RN.
It is to honor Sonia Sklaver’s memory that her family wishes to gift this scholarship to qualified and compassionate nursing students.
