Louis Girshon & Rina Goldman

“The Louis Girshon Memorial Scholarship was established to honor my father. He was an immigrant from Eastern Europe in the 1920s. He was lured by a chance for a better and more positive life. As he was semi-literate, he had no chance for a higher paying job. Over the years, he worked in fast food restaurants and grocery shops. Eventually, he was able to buy his own grocery shop. With this financial security, he was able to marry and support a wife and family. Little by little he improved the family’s financial status. He had to work extremely hard for his success. This scholarship is to help those who choose to immigrate to this country, that are fortunate enough to be students, to obtain the necessary tools to find successful lives and enjoy some of the benefits he was unable to obtain because of his lack of formal education.

I have been a volunteer tutor at BCC and been very impressed with the opportunities it provides for its students. I want to continue to assist the college and its students with this work." – Rina Goldman, daughter of Louis Girshon
